Peacock End Table
This older side table has been in my home for over forty years. And when I got it, it was considered old. I really wish they still made tables like this. Side tables are becoming harder to find. The top of the table finish had worn off. Since this was a working table, by that I mean we actually used it, not just admire from a far... it really could use an upgrade.
Flower petals are often designed with stain using a shading technique. I got the idea that a peacock plume may be created using the same type of design and decided to give it a try. Now, I do realize that the actual peacock feather should be long and graceful. I decided to go with the short plumes since this table is a small style. If I ever do another peacock I would like to try my hand at the long feather of the peacock. But that is for another day!
After sketching out the peacock itself, the plumes took on a life of their own. The shape and size continued until the entire table was filled. Each 'tail feather' offers a deep rich look
I was shocked how fast this table was to stain. The "petals" are easy to stain and a couple hours later and I was sealing the top with hand rub poly.
While I am sure the design is not for everybody, it brings a smile whenever I walk into the room.
